Ancient Law
- Code of Ur-Nammu: "The Ur-Nammu law code is the oldest known, written about 300 years before Hammurabi's law code. When first found in 1901, the laws of Hammurabi (1792-1750 BC) were heralded as the earliest known laws. Now older collections are known: They are laws of the town Eshnunna (ca. 1800 BC), the laws of King Lipit-Ishtar of Isin (ca. 1930 BC), and Old Babylonian copies (ca. 1900-1700 BC) of the Ur-Nammu law code , with 26 laws of the 57. This cylinder is the first copy found that originally had the whole text of the code, and it is the world's oldest law code. Further it actually mentions the name of Ur-Nammu for the first time."
- Code of Hammurabi: Written in Akkadian at Babylon around 1790 BC.
- The Ten Commandments: Exodus 20 describes these commands being given to Moses by God. They have much in common with the other ancient law codes available to us.
- Commentary on the Ten Commandments: Offers Christian and Jewish points of view.
Criminal Law
- Omnibus Crime Control and Safe Streets Act of 1968: All 48 pages of the act which says of itself: "DECLARATIONS AND PURPOSE: Congress finds that the high incidence of crime in the United States threatens the peace, security, and general welfare of the Nation and its citizens. To prevent crime and to insure the greater safety of the people, law' enforcement efforts must be better coordinated, intensified, and made more effective at all levels of government. Congress finds further that crime is essentially a local problem that must be dealt with by State and local governments if it is to be controlled effectively. It is therefore the declared policy of the Congress to assist State and local governments in strengthening and improving law enforcement at every level by national assistance."
- The Antiterrorism and Effective Death Penalty Act of 1996: The Antiterrorism and Effective Death Penalty Act of 1996, or AEDPA, made it more difficult for convicted criminals to challenge their convictions.
- Identity Theft and Assumption Deterrence Act of 1998
- Bill of Rights: The Bill of Rights consists of the first ten amendments to the United States Constitution.
