International Institute of Buffalo, Inc.

Hinke Boot, Executive Director

The initial four-day seminar titled "Conflict and Peacemaking Across Cultures" was held September 9-12, 1997. Resource people were Dr. Duane Ruth-Heffelbower and Elaine Enns of PACS and Frank Disimino of Immigration and Refugee Services of America.

Participants included refugees from Iraq, Kurdistan, Bosnia, Burma and Somalia, representatives from the local police, county government, Department of Social Services, other resettlement agencies and IIB staff, a total of 23 people. The group agreed to continue as a group, meeting regularly, and to assist in various ways in conflicts occurring between refugees and community agencies and individuals. The next step is to begin tracking the group's activities and determining how it succeeds in assisting residents of Buffalo and the surrounding area. A newsletter is planned.
